Author: Lola M. Schaefer

Genre: Nonfiction: Biography and Informational Book
Grade Level: PreK – 5th grade

“In one lifetime, female red kangaroo will birth 50 joeys.”

YIKES! That is a lot of joeys for one kangaroo! The book starts with talking about spider spinning one papery egg sac. Then as the book continues, the number starts getting bigger and so does the illustration that mentions the number. For example, on the kangaroo page, you will see 50 joeys surrounding a mama kangaroo. Though the first section of the book is short and sweet. The end section is meant for older children. In this section, the author writes about the animals that she has mentioned but in more depth details like where they live, how much they weigh and how long they live. She also gives the scientific/Latin name of the animals. For example, Red Kangaroos are called Macropus Rufus. At the very end, she ends the book by encouraging readers to learn math through researching facts about the animal they love.

Thoughts:
Did you know that giraffes wear 200 spots on its body? I did not either. But if you read this book, you will learn about awesome facts like this. I love this book. When I think of an informational book, I think about photographs with about 2 or 3 pages long information. BUT this book was surprisingly neither of that. Instead it is filled with beautiful illustration from the end pages to the back cover. And not only just it gives you information, but it also teaches you math. Numbers are presented in each page, so it will be a good counting book. I would call this book a triple threat. 1-it gives you information, 2- it makes you want to read & 3- it features math.  Excellent book!
